District Attorney

The District Attorney has the responsibility of prosecuting all felony, gross misdemeanor, and juvenile offender cases committed anywhere within the County, as well as all misdemeanor cases occurring within the County.

The Office of the District Attorney is the legal branch of local government representing the Eureka County Commission and other county agencies in civil, administrative, and litigation matters.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Eureka County District Attorney's Office is to fulfill our duties set forth by the United States and Nevada constitutions, State statutes and ordinances, in order to ensure the laws of the County and State are faithfully enforced and the County receives sound ethical legal advice.

Introduction to District Attorney Ted Beutel:

Ted Beutel graduated from college with honors from the University of Chicago in 1984. In 1989 he graduated from the University of Chicago Law School, where he served as Articles Editor for a law school journal. That same year he passed the Illinois Bar Exam. Right after law school, Ted went to work for the Idaho Supreme Court. After serving two years with the Court, Ted passed the Idaho Bar Exam, then went to work with the law firm of Holland & Hart and practiced in the firm's Boise and Denver Offices.

Ted relocated to Nevada and went to work for the law firm of Morris, Brignone & Pickering (now known as Shreck Morris) with offices in Reno and Las Vegas. While in Las Vegas Ted applied for and was accepted to work as a Deputy District Attorney for White Pine County. Soon thereafter he was appointed the Chief Deputy assisting the District Attorney in all aspects of work for the County. He was elected for his first term as the Eureka County District Attorney in 1998.

Criminal Prosecution:
The District Attorney, upon receiving reports from law enforcement agencies, has the sole discretion and responsibility of reviewing the information contained in the reports to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to prosecute the case. The District Attorney may, and routinely does, have the investigating officer try to obtain additional information from the parties involved to better determine the criminal status.

All crimes committed in Eureka County are prosecutable by the District Attorney, including traffic offenses. This office makes the determination to prosecute based on the facts contained in the reports submitted by law enforcement agencies, and information gathered from the parties involved.
